Ongoing lessons

Close-up and Closer with Art

Target group: from 1st to 4th grade groups
Duration: 60–90 minutes
Location: Tartu Art Museum (Raekoja plats 18, Tartu)
Languages: Estonian or English
Price: 2 EUR per student

The museum lesson introduces art through the notions of “me and us”, enabling the participating students to experience art through themselves and their classmates. This lesson does not delve into art history or artists’ techniques but rather explores the impact art has on us. Art will provide ways to get to know and understand each other better. In the lesson, artworks guide us to actively observe ourselves and interact with each other. Through such an approach, art becomes the tool, influencer, inspiration and a lot more.

The lesson is also created for the teacher who will participate the same way students do. Our wish is to inspire teachers to continue using the methods in the future in their classroom and at other art exhibitions. The methodology is based on the national curriculum and the Bullying-Free School Foundation’s programmes. The lesson is not dependent on any particular exhibition where it is being carried out and can be adjusted to various contexts.

The lesson was created as part of the "Creative Connections" project by Jane Meresmaa-Roos and Sireli Uusmaa.

LOOVHOOV outdoor learning lesson

Target group: elementary school (adaptable for other age groups, including adults)
Lesson duration: 60 minutes
Location: Tartu Art Museum and the city space around it (Raekoja plats 18, Tartu)
Languages: English or Estonian
Price: 2 EUR per student

In the outdoor lesson LOOVHOOV we explore the outdoor space, make activity patterns and solve creative tasks. The lesson combines creativity, movement, social skills development and outdoor learning methods.

Outdoor learning cards are used in the lesson, which guide you to perceive both yourself and the outdoor space through playful activities.  Observation, movement and activity tasks make you notice the environment, verbalise your feelings, express yourself, play and take each other into account in cooperative actions. The aim of the lesson is to support the development of social skills, helping both the teacher and the students in forming positive group dynamics.

Most of the lesson takes place outdoors, please wear comfortable and weatherproof clothes.

The LOOVHOOV cards used in the lesson have been developed by Sireli Uusmaa and Jane Meresmaa-Roos within the project "Creative Connections".

To buy the cards for personal use, visit the Tartu Art Museum's online shop: https://pood.tartmus.ee/en/product/outdoor-learning-cards-loovhoov-eng/.

Past lessons

Colouring and art therapy workshop

Target group: elementary school (adaptable for other age groups, including adults)
Lesson duration: 60-90 minutes
Price: €3 per student
Location: Tartu Art Museum (Raekoja plats 18, Tartu)
Languages: English, Estonian, or Russian

The Tartu Art Museum invites all to exciting coloring workshops. The class is based on artist Jarõna Ilo's art therapy methodology. Through a hands-on activity, participants learn how to mix all of the other colours from the three primary colours. The focus will be on the relationship between colours and emotions and how mixing colours affects us emotionally. The workshop allows one to understand and express one’s emotions. Feelings and colours meet on a subconscious level and participants learn more about themselves in the process.

Jarõna Ilo is an Estonian artist of Ukrainian origin. Ilo has taught drawing at the Estonian Academy of Arts, the Old Town Education College, the Viljandi Culture Academy and the Australian National University in Canberra. Since 2017 she has conducted art therapy workshops in Ukraine, which have primarily benefited children, but also teachers and school psychologists.

We recommend choosing clothing suitable for painting, so that you don't have to worry about acrylic paint staining your clothes.

Target group: elementary school
Lesson duration: 90 minutes
Price: €2 per student
Location: Tartu Art Museum (Raekoja plats 18, Tartu)
Languages: English or Estonian

In the museum lesson, we will find out what secrets are hidden in the Leaning Building in Tartu. The contemporary art exhibition "The Secrets of the Leaning Building" has brought together artists from Estonia and elsewhere who, in collaboration with children, have created works of art that captivate the senses, inviting children, young people and adults to play, draw, communicate, touch things, lay down, paint, travel and experiment. The exhibition provides a versatile overview of different forms of art and provides opportunities to express oneself in a new way.
